Snowstorm Forces School Closures Across Waterloo Region as Arctic Air Moves In

A powerful winter storm has forced widespread school closures across Waterloo Region on Thursday as hazardous weather conditions continue to worsen.

Both the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) confirmed that all schools and board-operated sites are closed due to unsafe travel conditions. The closures also extend to before- and after-school programs, child care centres, and community use programs operating within local schools.

In addition, St. Louis Adult Learning and Continuing Education Centres have suspended all in-person programs and services for the day.

The closures come as the region experiences heavy snowfall, black ice, strong winds, and bitterly cold temperatures. Environment officials warn that wind chills could approach -20°C, while snowfall totals may reach up to 20 centimetres, significantly reducing visibility and making roads slippery.

Local officials continue to urge residents to limit travel unless absolutely necessary and to allow extra time for commuting as road crews work to manage snow-covered and icy conditions.

For the most up-to-date information on weather-related cancellations, delays, and service disruptions, residents are encouraged to monitor official school board announcements and trusted local news sources.
