Freezing Rain, Ice Pellets & Snow Hit Waterloo Region: Hazardous Travel Expected

A yellow weather warning is in effect for the Waterloo Region as freezing rain, ice pellets and snow are expected to create hazardous conditions on Tuesday. Environment Canada forecasts freezing rain developing Tuesday morning, continuing for several hours before transitioning to snow in the evening as a low‑pressure system moves through southern Ontario.

The freezing rain may mix with snow and ice pellets, and 1–5 mm of ice accumulation is possible on roads, sidewalks and other surfaces, increasing the risk of slippery conditions for commuters and pedestrians. Earlier in the week, a special weather statement for 5–10 cm of snow impacted Monday’s commute before being lifted.

The City of Cambridge declared a snow event, prohibiting on‑street parking to help snowplows clear roads effectively. Vehicles left on city streets risk being ticketed or towed until the event ends.

Residents should plan for challenging travel throughout the day and into the evening, adjusting their commute and allowing extra time on slippery roadways. Local drivers and walkers are encouraged to stay updated with Environment Canada alerts and take precautions against icy surfaces.
