Distraction Theft Reported in Cambridge Under Investigation by WRPS

Waterloo Regional Police are investigating a suspected distraction theft involving an elderly woman in Cambridge.

Police say the incident occurred around 12 p.m. on January 10 near the intersection of Franklin Boulevard and Elgin Street. According to investigators, the victim was approached by two suspects — a man and a woman — who arrived in a dark-coloured SUV.

The female suspect reportedly exited the vehicle and began speaking with the woman. During the interaction, the suspect attempted to place a necklace around the victim’s neck. The victim backed away, and members of the public intervened, prompting the suspects to leave the area in the SUV.

Police confirmed that no physical injuries were reported as a result of the encounter. Officers are now seeking to identify the suspects and are asking anyone who witnessed the incident — particularly those who stepped in to help — to come forward.

Distraction thefts often involve suspects using conversation or gestures to divert attention while attempting to steal personal items such as jewelry or wallets. Police are reminding residents, especially seniors, to remain cautious when approached by strangers and to trust their instincts if a situation feels unsafe.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Waterloo Regional Police or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
