The Region of Waterloo is facing water capacity challenges that may affect ongoing and future developments in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge. The issue, first identified in December in the Mannheim Service Area, has raised concerns about whether the region can support its growing population.

At a recent Sustainability, Infrastructure, and Development Committee meeting, local officials shared updates but did not provide definitive solutions, leaving some projects temporarily on hold. Kitchener council recently approved developments, including a nearly 1,000-unit project on Courtland Avenue, with a “holding provision,” meaning construction cannot start until water capacity solutions are confirmed.

The Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge chambers of commerce have emphasized that delays could impact both economic growth and investment, especially as infrastructure projects like Phase 2 of the LRT expansion approach.
