Kitchener Heritage Committee Advances Plan to Protect Iconic Spiral Parkade

Kitchener’s Heritage Committee is moving forward with plans to designate the iconic spiral parking garage on Duke Street as a protected heritage property, a decision that could limit future redevelopment of the downtown site.

The concrete parkade, known for its distinctive spiral shape and lime green exterior, has long been a recognizable feature in downtown Kitchener. While the structure is visually prominent, committee members debated whether it qualifies as a significant piece of local heritage.

Some expressed concern that a heritage designation could restrict future land use. Committee member Grant Eveleigh said the building’s designation could potentially “encumber or inhibit” redevelopment opportunities in a growing downtown core.

Despite those concerns, the majority of the committee supported the designation. Committee member Peter Ciuciura described the structure as “heroic in its proportions” and “optimistic in its design,” arguing it merits long-term protection under heritage rules.

The committee ultimately voted to advance the designation, which would protect the parkade from demolition or major alterations for years to come. The move is part of a broader heritage initiative that also includes six other properties across Kitchener.

Among the additional sites recommended for heritage status is the former Pine Grove schoolhouse near Sportsworld Drive, highlighting the city’s efforts to preserve a range of historically and architecturally notable properties.

The heritage designation proposal will continue through the city’s approval process, where final decisions will determine how the protected status could impact future planning and development in downtown Kitchener.
