Freezing Rain Warning Issued for Waterloo Region This Weekend

Waterloo Region is facing a return to winter conditions after a brief warm spell, prompting Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement ahead of the weekend. The advisory warns of freezing rain developing Saturday afternoon and continuing into the overnight hours, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions.

According to Environment Canada, precipitation is expected to begin as snow or rain before transitioning into freezing rain as temperatures fluctuate near the freezing mark. Ice accretion of up to 2 millimetres is possible, which could result in icy and slippery roads, sidewalks, and walkways throughout the region.

Areas north of Highway 401 are expected to see the greatest impact, while communities to the south may avoid significant icing as temperatures are forecast to remain slightly above zero. However, officials caution that conditions may still deteriorate as the day progresses, especially during periods of steady precipitation.

The weather system is expected to shift again overnight, with freezing rain changing back to snowfall by early Sunday. Forecasts indicate two to four centimetres of snow could accumulate before conditions improve.
